How to change custom fields in responses

A step-by-step guide on how to overwrite custom fields for one of your responses.

Use the Overwrite Invitations feature to update or correct custom fields after invitations have been sent.

You can use this to:

  • Fix incorrect data (e.g., wrong recruiter or department)

  • Add missing information (e.g., job title, location)

📕 Important notes:

  • Original custom fields must be included in the new file, or they will be lost

  • First name, last name, and email cannot be changed

  • Changes only apply to contacts in the new upload

  • Updates may take up to two hours to appear in dashboards

Overwrite invitations for manual survey sends

  2. Add or update the needed custom fields

  3. Save as .CSV

  4. In Starred, go to Survey Overview

Overwrite invitations for automated (ATS) surveys

Changes made to an application in your ATS after the survey has been sent will not reflect in Starred. Use this feature to update fields like the recruiter or coordinator name.

Updating custom fields is a manual process and can't really be done in bulk.

Steps:

  1. Export survey response from Starred

👍 You can either use filters to narrow down the responses to just the one you need before exporting, or you can remove all unnecessary rows after receiving your export.

  2. Remove columns added to the response by Starred

When you receive a response, Starred naturally adds information to it: invitation date, response date, language of the survey, sender, anonymity, and all the columns related to the ratings and comments. You do not need these columns when re-uploading the file

  3. Make sure the first 3 columns are first name, last name and email address.

  4. Add or correct custom field values

  5. Save as .CSV

  6. Go to Survey Overview → Find survey → See all invitations

  7. Find and open the invitation batch
  8. Upload the file under Update recipient properties

⚠️ For anonymous surveys, you must re-add names and email addresses so Starred can match responses.
