Sending hiring manager surveys via Slack
Deliver surveys as a Slack DM - alongside or instead of email
Starred can deliver hiring manager surveys as a direct message from the Starred Surveys app, with a button linking straight to the survey.
To get started, two things need to happen: a Slack admin connects your workspace to Starred once, and Slack is enabled on the relevant workflow action.
Note: Slack delivery is available for hiring manager surveys only.
Before you start
Make sure the following are in place before setting up the integration:
- Slack admin access - the connection uses a standard Slack OAuth screen. In most workspaces, only a Slack admin can approve new apps. If that's not you, you'll need to request approval before continuing.
- Starred admin access - you'll need access to Settings in Starred to connect the workspace.
- Hiring manager work email addresses coming through from your ATS - Starred matches recipients to Slack users by their internal work email address. If that address isn't coming through, the match won't work.
Step 1 - Connect your Slack workspace
This is done once for your entire Starred account. Once connected, any workflow can use Slack as a delivery channel.
- In Starred, open Settings from the bottom of the left navigation.
- Under Workspace & Tools, click Slack.
- Click Connect Slack.
- Slack will open its consent screen. Before clicking Allow:
- Check that the workspace shown is the correct one.
- Review the permissions - Starred Surveys requests access to view workspace info and to send direct messages.
- Click Allow.
- You'll be returned to Starred. A green "Slack connected successfully" banner confirms the connection, and the Slack card will show your workspace name and the date it was connected.
To disconnect, click Disconnect Slack on the same card. Surveys will fall back to whichever other channels are selected in each workflow - make sure Email is still ticked before disconnecting, or those sendouts will stop going out.
If the Allow button is greyed out or asks for approval
Some Slack workspaces require admin approval before new apps can be installed. If that's the case, submit the request to your Slack admin and return to this page once it's been approved. Nothing is saved in Starred until you land back on the connected Slack card.
Step 2 - Enable Slack on a survey workflow
This is done per workflow, so you can run some sendouts over Slack and leave others on email only.
- Go to Integrations, open your ATS, and click Edit workflow on the workflow you want to update.
- Open the send action and click Configure action.
- Scroll to Channels and tick Slack. Email stays selected unless you untick it - at least one channel must be active at all times.
- A Slack message section appears below the email fields. Fill in both:
- Title - the headline of the Slack message (defaults to your email subject)
- Message - the body text shown above the survey button
- Click Save.
The Slack message is written here and nowhere else. It's separate from your email content, so you can keep it shorter and more conversational without affecting your email copy.
If both Email and Slack are ticked, the hiring manager receives both. They link to the same survey, not two separate ones.
What hiring managers receive
Hiring managers receive a direct message from the Starred Surveys app containing the title, message text, and a button linking to the survey. The survey opens in the browser - it's the same survey they would have reached from an email link.
They don't need to install anything, join a channel, or sign in. They do need to be a member of the connected Slack workspace, using the same work email address that comes through from your ATS.
Note: Message styling is controlled by Slack, not Starred. Button colours and the overall look follow the recipient's Slack theme - Starred's styling settings don't apply here.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Slack and email together?
Yes - tick both in Channels. The hiring manager receives both messages, each linking to the same survey.
Do reminders go out over Slack?
Yes, the same way they do for email.
Does anonymity or reporting change?
No. Slack is just a delivery channel - survey and reporting behaviour is unchanged.
Do I need a separate connection for each workflow?
No. One workspace connection covers the whole account. Just tick Slack on each workflow you want to use it for.
What if the hiring manager isn't in the Slack workspace?
The sendout will show as Failed - Slack User Not Found. There's no automatic fallback to email.
