Starred Index

The Starred Index helps you understand how your results compare to the market - fairly and accurately. It adjusts your NPS and driver scores to remove the influence of structural factors that are outside your control, so you can focus on what really matters: your candidate experience.

In this article, you'll learn:

- What the Starred Index is and why it's important

- How it works behind the scenes to provide you the most accurate data

💡 What the Starred Index does

Understanding performance can be tricky when external factors skew results. For example:

  • Candidates in different countries tend to rate differently

  • Stages affect sentiment (rejected candidates are often less positive than hired ones)

  • Certain roles or departments receive systematically different feedback

The Starred Index automatically adjusts for these effects so your scores reflect experience quality, not background bias.

It ensures fair, meaningful benchmarking by accounting for differences you can’t control - letting you focus on improving what you can.

You’ll be able to:

  • Compare your results confidently across regions, departments, and roles

  • Track your true experience performance over time

  • Use benchmarks that reflect real-world fairness rather than structural bias

How it works

The Starred Index runs automatically as part of Starred’s data processing pipeline. Here’s what happens behind the scenes 👇

1. The system reads your raw survey data

2. It standardizes some of the data to allow the predictions

3. A model predicts what your expected NPS should be based on structural factors like:

    • Company size

    • Geography

    • Department mix

3. The model subtracts the predicted structural NPS from your actual observed NPS. The difference is your Experience Factor - the part of performance driven by your candidate experience itself

4. Each driver question (e.g., Brand, Transparency) is also corrected using the same logic

5. After processing, the system provides:

  • Adjusted NPS classification (Promoter / Passive / Detractor)

  • Adjusted driver scores (1–10 scale)

  • NPS benchmark (average adjusted NPS across companies)

  • Candidate experience benchmark (average adjusted driver scores)

6. The model is retrained monthly to stay accurate as data and markets evolve but historical data keeps its original adjustments for long-term consistency

How to use it
