Generating Invitation Links
You can generate survey links to share via email, chat, or social media.
With this method, respondents do not receive an invitation through Starred. Instead, you distribute the link yourself using your preferred communication channel (e.g., your email provider, ATS, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, etc.).
How to Generate Links
-
Go to your Survey Overview.
-
Click the dropdown menu next to the survey.
-
Select Generate links.
You’ll be redirected to a page where you can choose between three types of links:
-
Personal links (with properties)
-
Anonymous links (with properties)
-
General links (without properties)
You can ignore the "ATS hyperlink" section. This is a different type of link. You can learn about ATS Hyperlinks here →
Option 1: Personal Links (With Properties)
Use this option when:
-
You know the respondent’s name and email address
-
You want to attach properties (custom fields) to responses
-
You want to track responses at an individual level
Key Characteristics
-
Each link is tied to a specific email address.
-
Each link can only be used once.
-
If a respondent submits the survey again, their previous response will be overwritten.
-
This works similarly to uploading a CSV for manual invitations — but instead of sending an email from Starred, you receive unique links to distribute yourself.
What You Need
A CSV file containing:
-
Email addresses
-
Any additional properties you want to assign to responses
Refer to the CSV step-by-step guide →
How to Generate Personal Links
-
Select a user from the From dropdown.
This user will appear as the sender when the respondent opens the survey. -
Enter the email address where you want to receive the generated links.
You will receive a file containing one unique link per row. -
Upload your CSV file.
-
Wait for the email with your links.
-
Share the links with respondents via your preferred channel.
Option 2: Anonymous Links (With Properties)
This option is similar to Personal Links, but responses are anonymous.
Use this option when:
-
You want to attach properties to responses
-
You do not want to see the respondent’s name or email in the results
Key Characteristics
-
Each link is tied to a specific email address (for tracking purposes).
-
Each link can only be used once.
-
If the respondent submits again, their previous response is overwritten.
-
Responses remain anonymous in your dashboard.
What You Need
A CSV file including:
-
Email addresses
-
Any properties you want attached to responses
How to Generate Anonymous Links
-
Select a user from the From dropdown.
-
Enter the email address where you want to receive the file containing the links.
-
Upload your CSV file.
-
Wait for the email with one unique link per row.
-
Share the links with respondents as needed.
Option 3: General Links (Without Properties)
This is the most anonymous and generic option.
Use this option when:
-
You do not need to track respondents individually
-
You do not need to attach properties
-
You want a simple shareable link (e.g., social media, website, open campaigns)
Key Characteristics
-
No properties are assigned.
-
Responses are fully anonymous.
-
Links are not tied to an email address.
-
If someone completes the survey multiple times, each submission counts as a new response.
⚠️ Important:
-
If you reuse the same link across many contacts, your invitation count will remain 1.
-
This will make your response rate inaccurate (often showing 100%).
-
To track response rates properly, generate one link per respondent.
How to Generate General Links
-
Select a user from the From dropdown.
-
Enter the number of links you want to generate in the Count field.
-
Click Generate links.
-
A pop-up will display all generated links.
-
Copy and distribute the links as needed.
