How to Invite Manually

Learn the 3 ways that you can invite your respondents manually.

You can manually invite respondents to your survey in three ways:

  • Typing names and email addresses directly in Starred
  • Uploading a .CSV file
  • Copying and pasting contacts from a .CSV file

📘 Access permissions: Only users with the access right “Can send invitations” can invite respondents. If you don’t see the Invite new respondents option, contact your Starred administrator.

 

✏️ Option 1 - Add email addresses manually

This method is best when you only need to invite a few people and don’t need to add properties (custom fields) to their responses.

If you need your responses to include properties for filtering dashboards, use the .CSV upload method instead.

Steps

  1. In your Survey overview, click the ⋯ (three dots) next to the survey you want to send and select Invite new respondents.
  2. Choose Add manually.
  3. Enter each contact’s First name, Last name, and Email address.
  4. Click Compose when you’re done.

You’ll be redirected to the Invitation composer, where you can:

  • Review and edit your message
  • Select the right email template
  • Choose a sender
  • Enable reminders or scheduling (see below)

Finish your settings, preview, and send 🎉

 

Option 2 - Upload a CSV file

Use this option if you want to include properties (like Location, Recruiter, Department) to later filter your feedback.

Before you upload

  1. Create a CSV file following the correct format
  2. Keep your file under 500 contacts (maximum file size: 20 MB)
  3. Use UTF-8 encoding to avoid strange characters

⚠️  Duplicate emails are automatically removed during upload


Steps

  1. From your Survey overview, open the survey menu and select Invite new respondents.
  2. Choose Upload CSV.
  3. Click Upload file and select your file.
  4. Click Compose to move to the invitation composer.

There you can review your invitation text, select a template, set a sender, or schedule a reminder.

Finish your settings, preview, and send 🎉

 

Option 3 - Copy and paste from a CSV

This is a quick alternative to uploading a file.

Steps

  1. In Excel, Google Sheets, or Numbers, copy all fields including the header row (First name, Last name, Email, etc.).
  2. In Starred, select Copy/paste from CSV.
  3. Paste your data into the text box.
  4. Click Compose to continue.

You’ll then be redirected to the invitation composer to review and send your invitations.

 

Choosing the sender

When you’re in the Invitation composer, you can select who the email should come from.

  1. Click the Sender dropdown.
  2. Select a user or alias address.

💡 Notes:

  • Only users with “Can edit company details” can send invitations on behalf of others.
  • To send from an address that isn’t a Starred user (for example, recruitment@company.com), you can use an alias sender address Learn how to create one → 

Scheduling an invitation

If you know the best time to reach your audience, you can schedule your invitations.

  1. In the composer, check Schedule.
  2. Select your preferred date and time.

Your survey will be sent automatically at the chosen time.

 

Setting a reminder

Automatically remind non-respondents after a few days.

  1. Under Send reminder, select Yes.
  2. Choose the number of days after the initial send.

Reminders are identical to the original invitation, except the subject line begins with:

“Friendly reminder: [subject]”
